L'épuration par les plantes, en dépit de leur aspect plaisant, contribue ŕ la destruction de la matičre premičre que constitue la charge organique des eaux usées. Ces matériaux ne participent plus au maintien de la teneur en humus des terres. De plus, les plans d'eau artificiels créés pour l'épuration représentent une perte d'eau importante par évaporation. Dans les pays ŕ climat sec, comme sur la Grande Plaine Hongroise (photo ci-dessus), chaque litre d'eau perdue pour l'alimentation de la nappe phréatique nous rapproche d'avantage de l'état de désert. Il y a ŕ peine une dizaine d'années ŕ l'endroit oů cette photo a été prise, il y avait des champs de blé. L'oeuvre que l'agrochimie a entamé, l'épuration finit par l'achever.
