How to become independent from the public water distribution and waste water networks.
Summary
Taking a step against the current
From a technical point of view, it is only a question of implementing an autonomous water system for a dwelling. The system is suitable for all family houses with a small garden, even in urban areas. Its realisation is less of a technical problem than a question of broadmindedness regarding the implementation a new vision for the management and use of water.
EAUTARCIE is more than a simple technical option: it is a great step towards the autonomy of the mind. It is a political standpoint in order to leave consumer societies, the "all-to-the-bin" and it’s analogous logic of "all-into-the-sewer" philosophies. It is a way out of the "throw away" society and institutionalised irresponsibility.
The principle of operation (how the system works)
In a house equipped with such a system, the household uses (for all purposes) water which falls on the roof, although primarily for human consumption. The subsequent household “grey” water, after purification, is infiltrated into the garden grounds. The quality of the water purified in this underground and compact system satisfies the standards for drinking water (potable water).
The traditional WC is replaced by a third generation dry toilet: the bio-mastered litter toilet. This toilet finds its place, even in the most luxurious houses, and its comfort is equivalent to that offered by a WC. Its cost can also be compared with that of a traditional WC.
Environmental impacts
Overall, a EAUTARCIE household does not have any significant impact on the hydrous environment: just as if it were not there. With regards to environmental protection, the implementation of the system has positive environmental impacts exceeding the most optimistic forecasts.. The system is also transposable to urban districts. Cities equipped with EAUTARCIE would greatly reduce the pressure on hydrous reserves and water pollution by the private sector would be reduced to zero.
EAUTARCIE is particularly interesting for dry and desert areas of the world, where almost the entirety of water extracted from existing reserves could be available for agriculture, including the totality of used grey water, without loss and the least risk to public health.
In areas where good quality water is not any more available and subsequently from the techniques suggested, one can produce water of very high quality for human consumption, and for a ridiculously low cost compared with the currently recommended techniques.
Due to the removal of the flushing WC from the system, and the appropriate treatment of the toilet effluents with bio-mastered litter, the population would cease to contribute to nitrate pollution. Furthermore, the compost obtained can be used for all agricultural uses, without medical / sanitary risks, and contributes to the reduction of the population’s water requirements.
Economic impacts
With EAUTARCIE in the urban family housing districts, one can do perfectly without traditional sewerage systems and then selectively treat the water in the small gardens, without the least harmful environmental and medical effects. The expenses of cleansing a city are reduced to the installation of non watertight piping, reserved to collect rain water only from urban roads.
One can distribute water of lower quality for uses outside human consumption purposes, and in a decentralized way, produce high quality drinking water from rainwater. A person needs only approximately 3 to 5 litres of drinking water per day. For other uses, water of less quality is adequate.
Even in desert areas, the production of drinking water of high quality (for human consumption ), is possible thanks to appropriate storage and filtration of rainwater.
The scientific bases of EAUTARCIE
EAUTARCIE is the fruit of approximately 20 years of scientific research made partly with the Faculty of Applied Science at the University of Lubumbashi (Congo) and at the University of Mons-Hainaut (Belgium). This portfolio of very simple and cheap techniques was tested during years in the field., and the various techniques of EAUTARCIE constitute the daily reality of thousands of households in Belgium and France.
